Trello Billing Guide 2026: Free Trials, Cancellation, Refunds & Billing Tips
Everything you need to know about managing your Trello subscription — from the Premium 14-day trial to the cancellation process.
Trello Free Trial: 14 Days on Premium
- Premium plan only — Standard has no free trial
- 14 days duration
- No credit card required at signup
- Full Premium features during trial period
- Auto-downgrades to Free at trial end (no charge)
- All data preserved after downgrade
Recommendation: If you're deciding between Standard and Premium, start with the Premium free trial first. This lets you evaluate whether Timeline, Dashboard, and Calendar views are useful for your team before committing to either paid plan.
Even if you decide Premium is overkill, the trial gives you a full picture of what you're choosing not to pay for — which makes the Standard decision more confident.
Start free 14-day trialMonthly vs Annual Billing
Annual billing is always cheaper — but requires a 12-month commitment.
| Plan | Annual billing | Monthly billing | Annual savings |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard | $5/user/mo | $6/user/mo | 17% cheaper ($12/user/yr) |
| Premium | $10/user/mo | $12.5/user/mo | 20% cheaper ($30/user/yr) |
Annual billing refunds: Atlassian generally does not refund annual subscriptions after the initial period. Only choose annual billing if your team headcount is stable.
Maximum Quantity Billing (October 2025 Change)
Since October 2025, monthly billing subscribers are charged based on the peak seat count during the billing period, not the seat count at the end of the period.
Example: Your team has 10 users on Standard monthly billing. You add 5 contractors on Day 5 (total: 15 users). You remove them on Day 25. On your billing date (Day 30), you are charged for 15 users — not 10.
Who this affects
Teams on monthly billing with variable headcount — agencies with contractors, companies running pilots, startups with fast growth.
How to avoid it
Switch to annual billing (uses different billing model). Or schedule contractor additions at month start and removals at month end.
How to Cancel Your Trello Subscription
Open your workspace
Go to trello.com and select the workspace you want to cancel.
Go to Workspace Settings
Click your workspace name in the left sidebar → Settings.
Open Billing
In Settings, click the Billing tab.
Click Cancel Subscription
Find the 'Cancel Subscription' button. You'll be shown the date your plan reverts to Free.
Confirm cancellation
Confirm the cancellation. Your plan remains active until the billing period ends — you won't lose access immediately.
After cancellation:
- Your paid plan remains active until the end of the current billing period
- You are not charged again after cancellation
- At period end, workspace reverts to Free plan automatically
- All boards and data are preserved
- Boards beyond the 10-board Free limit are archived (not deleted)
- Members beyond the 10-collaborator Free limit lose access
Adding and Removing Users
Adding users mid-cycle
- • Charged immediately at a prorated rate
- • Prorated for remaining days in billing period
- • Appears as an immediate charge on your payment method
- • Monthly billing: subject to maximum quantity billing (see above)
Removing users mid-cycle
- • No immediate refund
- • Credit applied to next billing cycle
- • The user loses workspace access immediately on removal
- • Annual billing: credits accumulate toward renewal
Billing FAQ
Does Trello have a free trial?
Only the Premium plan has a 14-day free trial. No credit card is required to start the trial. At the end of 14 days, if you haven't added a payment method, your workspace automatically downgrades to the Free plan — all your boards and cards are preserved, but you lose Premium features. Standard does not have a trial.
How much cheaper is annual billing vs monthly?
Standard: $5/user/month (annual) vs $6/user/month (monthly) — 17% cheaper annually. Premium: $10/user/month (annual) vs $12.50/user/month (monthly) — 20% cheaper annually. Enterprise has no monthly billing option — annual only.
How do I cancel my Trello subscription?
As a Workspace admin, go to: Workspace Settings → Billing → Click 'Cancel subscription'. Your workspace immediately begins displaying the downgrade date. At the end of the current billing period, the workspace reverts to Free plan. Your boards, cards, and data are preserved — but limited to 10 boards (excess boards are archived, not deleted).
What is Trello's refund policy?
Atlassian generally does not provide refunds on annual billing after the initial period. For monthly billing, you can cancel at any time and will not be charged for the next cycle — but the current month is not refunded. Contact Atlassian support for unusual circumstances (billing errors, fraud, etc.).
What happens to my boards when I downgrade to Free?
All boards and their data are preserved. However, the Free plan limit of 10 boards per workspace means any boards beyond 10 are automatically archived (not deleted). You can unarchive them by closing other boards. Members beyond the 10-collaborator limit will lose access until headcount is reduced.
How does prorated billing work when adding users?
When you add users mid-billing cycle, you're charged a prorated amount for the remaining days. For example, if you add a user 15 days into a monthly Standard billing period, you pay $2.50 (half of $5) for that period. Removal of users mid-cycle: no immediate refund — credited to the next billing cycle.
Can I switch between monthly and annual billing?
Yes. Switching from monthly to annual takes effect at the next renewal date. Switching from annual to monthly is generally not allowed mid-term — you must wait until the annual period ends. Contact Atlassian support if you need to switch mid-term.
